48North Cannabis Corp. is a vertically-integrated cannabis parent company, located in Canada. When we were hired, they were in a uniquely strange moment. Canada had passed legislation to legalize cannabis but had not made the particulars of selling clear. And the date of legalization was months away, so they were cultivating a brand and product that was not yet legal but was going to experience a massive boom the minute it was legal. As one of the few licensed corporations, they had an opportunity but a very narrow path to market ahead of the launch. They were still attracting investors and wanted to separate themself from the other ponies at the gate.
We landed on a highly editorial magazine. Rich with content and lush visuals, the mag would show their POV as pro-wellness and women-focused. In partnership with BLØK Design, the firm that created the brand identity and Applied Storytelling, the strategy firm hired to work on the brand platform, we developed a magazine that appealed to both industry insiders, potential investors and future 48North customers. We worked with legal aid to ensure the copy was within the razor thin lines of allowed language and still managed to make something cool and shelf-stable. The magazine empowered 48North to develop and experiment with their new personality, without the usual playground of the market.
